One of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years is that when it comes to money, time is one of your greatest assets.
It's easy to think, "I'll sort that out later" or "I'll start investing when life settles down." But the truth is that every year, every month, and sometimes even every week that we delay making positive changes can have a significant impact on our long-term financial future.
The good news? You don't have to do everything at once.
Small changes made today can create powerful results over time.
Whether it's reducing debt, increasing your KiwiSaver contributions, reviewing your mortgage, starting an emergency fund, or putting money into long-term investments such as managed funds, shares, or property, taking action sooner gives your money more time to work for you.
This is where the time value of money and the power of compounding really come into play. Starting earlier means your money has longer to grow, and that can make a remarkable difference over the years.
That's why I encourage people to regularly review their financial strategy. Life changes, incomes change, priorities change, therefore your financial plan should evolve with you.
In fact, one of the best times to review your finances is when you receive a pay rise or increase in income. Rather than allowing that extra money to disappear into everyday spending, it can be a wonderful opportunity to:
• Make extra repayments on debt or your home loan.
• Increase your KiwiSaver contributions.
• Build up your savings.
• Begin investing for the future.
• Create greater financial security for yourself and your family.
There are many different pathways to building wealth, and no matter where you are starting from, it's never too late to make progress.
But one thing I know for certain is this:
The sooner you begin, the more options you create for your future.
Your future self will never regret the steps you take today.
So perhaps the question isn't, "Can I afford to start now?"
Maybe it's, "Can I afford to keep putting it off?"
If you'd like to review where you are financially and ensure your current strategy is aligned with your goals and the life you want to create, I'd love to help.
